Sarcocca can make an informal alternative to box - being well suited to informal planting in shaded areas - providing all year round garden interest. Sarcococcas compact habit make it useful for drift planting in shady areas where with time it will form an attractive drift, however be prepared to wait as Sarcocca is rather slow growing . Sarcocca produces masses of small strongly sweet scented cream / white flowers from December through to March, followed by black berries in winter.
Cultivation tips: Sarcocca is a hardy shrub that flourishes on free draining fertile soils (including chalk), but prefers a moisture retentive yet free draining soil with plenty of humus. This evergreen is suitable for planting under shade - making it ideal for woodland planting and useful for problem shady areas. Water occasionally if very dry - mulch on poor soils. No need to prune but trim to shape. Height and spread up to 1 metre.
