Cercis siliquastrum bears masses of purple pink pea like flowers in late spring, wich are followed by attractive heart shaped foliage which turns to yellow in autumn. This tree makes a fine specimen tree in a large lawn or it can be planted to give height at the back of a border, but be aware that it will spread over time.
Cultivation tips: This is the larger of the Cercis genus of trees and with time Cercis siliquastrum will slowly but surely grow to form a handsome spreading tree within a lawn. The Judas tree will grow in any moist yet well drained soil in full or part sun, however Cercis will tolerate a drier soil or even clays. Avoid very exposed planting locations as Cercis can catch winter frosts, always preferring a sheltered warm planting location away from cold winter winds. Remove frost damage and prune to shape at winters end and mulch every few years to feed.
