Tolerating acid or alkaline soils (including chalk) elm is a tough tree that can tolerate exposed locations. This smaller variety of European elm requires a spot in full sun elm will flourish on dry soils but avoid damp or wet locations. Larger trees are prone to die back from dutch elm disease, which can be avoided by cutting back hard every 5 - 10 years.
